PRESS RELEASE
FOMAPAK: “Thoroughly Investigate the Murder of Affan Kurniawan, Stop Violence by the Police – DPR and Government Fail to Protect the People”

Langsa, August 30, 2025 –
Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.
FOMAPAK expresses its deepest condolences for the tragedy that befell the people: the victims of the Makassar DPRD Building fire, and the death of Affan Kurniawan (21) during a demonstration on August 28 in Jakarta after being run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle.
The Student and Youth Front Against Violence (FOMAPAK) strongly condemns the repressive actions of the police, which have once again claimed the lives of our nation’s children. This incident cannot be reduced to an “incident,” but rather a serious violation of human rights and clear evidence of the state’s failure to protect the right to life of its people.
The National Police Chief’s apology and condolences from state officials are nothing but empty rhetoric. What is needed is not mere words, but substantive justice: uncovering the truth, punishing the perpetrators on the ground and the superiors who gave the orders, and institutional reform of the security forces.
However, this tragedy also demonstrates the failure of the House of Representatives (DPR) as a people’s institution. Instead of carrying out its oversight role over the apparatus and enacting legislation that favors the people, the DPR is instead consumed by narrow political interests, rife with scandals, and preoccupied with maintaining excessive benefits and privileges.
The DPR’s inability to respond to a humanitarian tragedy like this is clear evidence that the legislative body has lost its moral legitimacy. The state has failed to be present, the DPR has failed to protect it, and the people have once again become victims.
FOMAPAK’s demands:
1. Thoroughly investigate and bring to justice all officers involved, including the commanders who gave the orders.
2. Stop all forms of violence by the authorities against people peacefully expressing their aspirations.
3. Provide full compensation and protection to the families of the victims and all those injured.
4. Carry out comprehensive reform of the security sector and fundamentally correct the DPR’s function as an oversight institution.

The General Chair of FOMAPAK, Tgk. Nasruddin, SE, emphasized:
“The death of Affan Kurniawan is not just a tragedy, but a humanitarian scandal that blatantly exposes the state’s inability to uphold human rights. The authorities have failed to protect the people, and the House of Representatives (DPR) has failed to carry out its function as a check on power. Democracy cannot be upheld on the blood of the people. If the DPR continues to ignore this, then the institution loses its right to be called a representative of the people.”
FOMAPAK calls on all civil society, academics, students, labor unions, and human rights movements to unite in solidarity. This tragedy is a test of the nation’s morality: will we side with the people, or will we allow power to continue to take their lives.
