Langsa City Government Commemorates World Environment Day With Theme “Stop Plastic Pollution”

Langsa.ANN | The Langsa City Government (Pemkot) held a Morning Roll Call to commemorate World Environment Day 2025 with the theme “Stop Plastic Pollution” on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
The Mayor of Langsa Jeffry Sentana S Putra, SE, represented by Assistant II for Economic and Development Affairs Ali Musafah, SE, led the Roll Call to commemorate World Environment Day 2025 in the yard of the Langsa City Environmental Service Office.
The Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency Dr. Hanif Faisolnurofiq, S.Hut, M.P in his remarks delivered by Ali Musafah said that the commemoration of World Environment Day 2025 took place in the midst of the climate crisis that we have all experienced.
The threat of plastic pollution is now a serious threat to the earth and our lives, so today is an important moment to reflect on our relationship with nature, as well as the real steps that we have and must take to maintain its sustainability in the future.
Currently, the earth is experiencing three global crises (triple planetary crisis), namely climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, climate change, loss of biodiversity and depletion of natural resources, and pollution.
“Globally, it is estimated that it will continue and cannot be avoided, as a result of the three global crises, it will have a negative impact on various aspects of life, such as the environment, health, community life, and the overall rate of development. Along with human activities in the management and utilities of natural resources that are excessive, the condition of the earth is declining,” he explained.
As we all know, Indonesia has now entered a waste emergency phase. Based on 2024 SIPSN data, there are still 22.17 million tons of waste that are still dumped into the environment and 54.44% of waste ends up in landfills that still have open dumping status. In 2028, it is estimated that all landfills in Indonesia will no longer be able to accommodate their waste if their management is still business as usual (smelly).
Currently, the government, through the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Agency (KLH/BPLH), is making every effort to overcome and resolve the waste problem on the downstream side, including imposing sanctions in the form of government coercion on the Provincial and Regency/City Governments that operate 343 Final Processing Sites (TPA) with an open dumping system.
Furthermore, mandating the Regency/City government to prepare a roadmap for resolving waste management with an upstream to downstream approach, recommending an increase in the budget allocation for waste management in the regions from an average of 0.6% to 3% of the total Distric Budgeting plan (APBD), facilitating the construction of waste processing facilities into energy sources in 33 cities with waste generation equivalent to or more than 1,000 tons/day.
The government is also currently revising and strengthening several waste management regulations, increasing the obligations and responsibilities of business actors to resolve their waste independently, building pilot projects for integrated waste management in Jakarta and Bali, and providing technical assistance and guidance to Regency/City governments in planning and implementing a roadmap for resolving waste problems in the regions.
Let’s make this World Environment Day a turning point for real action, not just a ceremony. Every small step we take, from reducing the use of plastic bags, sorting waste, to supporting recycled products will have a big impact on future generations. “The earth does not need us, but we need the earth”. Let’s leave a healthy and comfortable environment, not piles of plastic waste.
Present at the roll call were Langsa Police Chief AKBP Mughi Prasetyo Habrianto, S.I.K, West Langsa Military District Commander Captain Kav. Khairul Nizam, Distric chief forum (Forkopimda) Elements, OPD Leaders, Sub-district Heads, government officer (ASN), Satpol PP, Transportation Agency, BPBD, Honorary/Contract Workers and Langsa City Cleaning Officers.
